Located in the wild landscape of the Scottish Highlands right on the north-east coast of Dornoch Firth, Royal Dornoch is an exceptional golf course regularly ranked in the world’s Top 20 golf courses. Steeped in history, this traditional links course officially opened in 1877, although golf had been played in the area for well over 100 years prior. Names such as Old Tom Morris and Donald Russ, synonymous within golfing circles, have both had considerable design influence on the course extensions and renovations.

The landscape is perfect links terrain with great stretches of sand built up over time by the cascading North Sea, although visiting golfers will be pleased to know the sea has less fury here than other parts of the coastline. Covered with swathes of gorse and patches of colour depending on the season, this isolated stretch of land is spectacular and remote enough to genuinely feel at one with nature. Words such as humbling and spell-binding are often used when describing Royal Dornoch golf club and its unique setting.

In stark contrast to the awe-inspiring geography, the Championship course is relatively simple, with a conventional nine out and nine in layout, although a large number of the greens are built on raised plateaus ensuring approach shots are challenging at the best of times. And although this stretch of coastline is slightly more amenable than other parts, the wind can still play a major part in wrecking most scorecards.

Yes Royal Dornoch is a private member’s club, but it has always heartily welcomed visitors and is proud of the informal highland reception it offers. As far as golf holidays go, Royal Dornoch is really one of the trump cards. With Inverness airport an hour’s drive, and other classic golf courses Nairn and Castle Stuart also within an hour and a half’s drive, Royal Dornoch is well worth the golfing pilgrimage.

    Attire in Golf Clubhouses
Like many of the traditional Scottish links courses, there is a very relaxed feel about the club but clean and smart golfing attire should be respected. Wet clothing, baseball caps, rugby tops and t-shirts are all forbidden.

Jeans are allowed in the clubhouse but only if they are smart without any fraying and holes.

    Practice Facilities
There is a putting green, a large practise ground including a chipping/pitching and bunker area and a 3-hole academy course.
