Much like the Kintyre course at Turnberry, Ballybunion’s Cashen or the Portland course at Royal Troon , Carnoustie’s Burnside course is perennially in the shadow of its more popular older sibling. But like the other ‘second courses’ mentioned, visiting golfers ignore the Burnside at their peril, for it’s a lovely course in its own right that would surely be much more highly regarded if it were located elsewhere.

After a slow start, things go up a gear around the 6th hole, with the course moving onto the same patch of ground as the esteemed Championship course. As with so many courses, the one-shotters are a real barometer of quality, with particular praise going to the 5th and 14th, both of which are magnificently demanding.

It goes without saying that the condition is immaculate, and with the infamous Barry Burn complemented the plethora of pot bunkers, a real challenge awaits. It might ‘only’ be a par 68, but a Standard Scratch of 70 tells you just how tough this course is.
