  • 18 holes, Par 71, 6,759 Yards. Links.

When the St Andrews Links Trust selected the Scotsman David McLay Kidd to design their seventh and most recent course it was seen as a bold, slightly radical move. But the man responsible for the original course at Bandon Dunes in Oregon was certainly up to the challenge, producing a remarkable course on the clifftops overlooking the Auld Grey Toon.

Having started with little more than rocky farmland, Kidd has worked a miracle in the same vein as nearby Kingsbarns, moving huge amounts of earth to create a spectacular links-style course that polarised opinion when it opened less than a decade ago. Traditionalists cried foul, but Kidd’s bold style has made this a course that everyone has an opinion on and it very quickly made the upper echelons of the various golf course ranking lists.

Some of the wild design touches like the rough-covered bluffs in the fairways and the rollercoaster greens have been softened a bit, but it remains as brilliant and exciting course to play… with one of the greatest backdrops imaginable. Don’t miss the amazing signature hole, the par-3 17th that plays across a rocky crevasse – it’s one of the world’s most spectacular holes.
