  • Rather like the St Andrews area, if you travel 45 minutes east of Edinburgh, you will find an abundance of fantastic links golf courses along the East Lothian coast. The big names of MuirfieldNorth Berwick West, and Gullane may not be in your budget, but thankfully there are plenty of great value options to choose from. The likes of Kilspindie, the 35th oldest golf club in the world (est. 1867), and Luffness New, a classic Old Tom Morris design, work really well with the more modern Craigielaw and seaside classic of Longniddry, ranked 59th in Golf World’s 100 Best Scottish Courses. Then of course you also have the second course at Gullane (No.3), which although shorter than its more famous sibling, is just as enjoyable to play.

  • Tee Times
Many of the golf courses you will wish to play are private golf clubs and therefore have limited tee times and restrictions on visitor play. Often demand outstrips supply, so it is never too early to begin planning your golf vacation.

    Attire in Golf Clubhouses
Most golf clubs allow visitors to use their clubhouse facilities, including the locker rooms and dining areas. Over the last decade, golf clubs have relaxed their dress codes, however we recommend taking a pair of street shoes (not sneakers) to avoid any issues.

    Caddies and Carts
The majority of the links courses have caddies available because, traditionally, they are walking courses, however we will often need to book them in advance for you. Caddies are self-employed and supply can change on a daily basis.

With regards golf carts, these can be hard to come by on the traditional links courses and in some cases do not even exist! As with caddies, please request carts at the time of booking with us and we will do our best to reserve them for you.

    Handicap Restrictions
Many of the golf courses have handicap restrictions for visiting golfers and will require to see official proof of your handicap. The primary reason for this is to ensure only seasoned golfers visit these courses and don’t hold up play.

    The Weather
The weather in this part of the world can be unpredictable, and you do need to be prepared for all kinds at any time of year. Having said that, in order to get the full UK and Ireland golf experience, every golfer should relish a dose of challenging weather at least once during their stay!

Although it is possible to play golf year-round, we view April as the start of the season. For the avid golfer who is looking to play 36 holes (or more) in one day, June and July have the longest daylight hours with play possible until 10pm!
