  • 18 holes, par 72, 6,941 yards. Links.

The Championship Course at Carnoustie has hosted The Open Championship no less than six times and is a superb example of traditional links golf. It is widely recognised as one of the best seaside links golf courses in the world and many professionals have declared it as one of the toughest – making it a must play on any golf vacation to Scotland. The original 18 hole course was designed by Old Tom Morris in 1857 but was revisited by James Braid in 1926 and has been hardly altered since – both of these former Open Champions have ensured that the Championship Course is a truly spectacular challenge.

With sloping fairways, fast greens and a selection of the most formidable bunkers in links golf, the Championship Course at Carnoustie certainly guarantees visitors an enjoyable but testing round on a memorable golf course. The majority of holes of this golf course will definitely live long in the memory but in particular the closing holes are famed, including the 15th or ‘Lucky Slap’ a long par 4 that requires golfers to hit an accurate drive between bunkers that await any errant shot before attacking a tight green surrounded by bunkers. Many will remember the images of Jean van de Velde playing out of the water on 18 when he lost in a three hole playoff to Paul Lawrie in the 1999 Open Championship. This magnificent golf course is a championship links that should be on every golfer’s itinerary when on a golf vacation to Scotland.
