Portmarnock Old Golf Club overview

Founded in 1894, Portmarnock Golf Club is consistently ranked amongst the top golf courses in the world, and has hosted multiple Irish Open’s, the Walker Cup, the Irish Amateur Close Championship and the British Amateur Championship.

Located on a narrow tongue of shallow duneland on the coastline just 10 miles north of Dublin, Tom Watson (five-time Open Champion) summed up the links beautifully by saying “there are no tricks or nasty surprises, only an honest, albeit searching test of shot making skills.”

Practice facilities include a driving range, two short game areas, and a putting and chipping green adjacent to the clubhouse. There is also a full caddie and forecaddie service available upon request.

Portmarnock Old Golf Course overview

Measuring over 7400 yards off the tips, and also being heavily affected by the wind you'll need you’re A-game to play well here. Traditionally laid out in two loops of nine like all the best classic links courses, Portmarnock offers nothing but quality from start to finish.

The greens are some of the best in Ireland - not only are they fast and kept in great condition, but they are also true. With all these qualities and more it's easy to see why the Old Course finds itself consistently ranked in the top 30 courses in the British Isles year after year.

Signature Holes

The 204-yard par-3 15th hole is a great test, with the beach on your right and a long but narrow green protected by a trifecta of bunkers. When the wind blows, which is more common than not, making the right club selection is crucial.

Did You Know?

Phil Mickelson represented the victorious 1991 Walker Cup team at Portmarnock, and apparently, during practice, he hit the elusive 15th green playing both right and left-handed.
