Little more than 10 years old, the course created by Pat Ruddy in the most remote of wilderness of Co. Donegal is surely a contender for the title of best new course of the last 25 years.

Sandy Hills wouldn’t be his only entry, either, with the remarkable European Club near Dublin another candidate. Throw in the likes of Castle Stuart, Kingsbarns, Machrihanish Dunes, Renaissance and Trump International into the mix and it’s clear that we’re in something of a golden age of links course design in the Britain and Ireland.

Ruddy’s marvel in the dunes is a remarkable piece of work, playing through the sandy mountains above the original Rosapenna course (also recently reworked by Ruddy). The landscape is out of this world, with holes clambering over, around and even through the giant dunes. The course might be new, but the land is ancient, and it feels like the holes have been merely uncovered, so natural is Ruddy’s design.

The SI 16th hole is one of the world’s most glorious holes, with the approach to a green framed by dunes, the beach, the water and the distant mountains being a classic Kodak moment. It’s not the only one either… this course is a visual treat that takes you on a magical tour through one of the world’s finest golfscapes. Ranked among the UK’s Top 20, Sandy Hills is simply a masterpiece and well worth the effort of getting there.
