  • 18 holes, par 71, 5629 yards. Links.

In an area dominated by links golf, Ballycastle represents a refreshingly different proposition to the classic coastal tracks of Co.Antrim like Portrush and Portstewart. The course is a glorious hybrid of styles, featuring a beguiling mix of links, parkland and heathland, with the layout skilfully taking golfers on a journey through the three different golfing landscapes.

The first five holes play through parkland, with Margy River and ancient ruins of Bonamargy Abbey very much in play. From there, we plunge down to the sea for a number of cracking holes, including the iconic 10th. A par-3 of just 115 yards, the name ‘Chasm’ tells you everything you need to know about a hole that can play anything from pitching wedge to 3-wood depending on the wind.

With the last few holes running across higher ground overlooking the coast, the views – which can extend to Scotland on a clear day – are somehow even more spectacular. One of nine founding members of the Golf Union of Ireland, the club was founded in 1890 and is one of the most historic in the area. It’s also one of the friendliest, the most unusual and the most playable. Thoroughly recommended.
