One of the oldest new courses in the world, St Andrews New is also one of the most underrated. Laid out by Old Tom Morris in 1895 at a time when demand for play on the Old was outstripping availability, the second course at the Home of Golf should definitely be on any St Andrews vacation itinerary.

Of course, everybody wants the once-in-a-lifetime experience of the majestic Old Course, but it’s often said that the locals actually prefer to play the adjacent New. With swathes of gorse defining the fairways, some spectacular holes in the dunes around the turn and greens that are half the size of the monsters on the Old, it can be a much tougher proposition too… especially in the wind, where precision play is required to score well.

The course has remained largely unaltered since the turn of the 19th century and is a real throwback with its classic out and back layout. As you’d expect it bears plenty of the classic St Andrews traits - including a huge double green (3rd and 15th) and shared fairways – put this is every inch a great course in its own right that would be even more highly regarded were not in the shadow of the world’s most famous links. An absolute must play.
