Located in Northern Ireland’s stunning Murlough Nature Reserve, Royal County Down is classed as one of the best golf courses in the British Isles, and rightly so. The course was founded in 1889 by a group of influential businessmen from Belfast. The history and development of the course over the years cannot be allocated to one person, but several. A host of prominent golfing names have had a hand in its success, including Old Tom Morris and Harry Colt. Throughout the years, County Down has witness and played host too many prestigious tournaments and championships such as the Irish Open Championship, the Ladies’ British Open Championship on numerous occasions, and more recently the Senior Open Championship.

Measuring in at over 7,000 yards, Royal County Down is a long course, with only the narrowest of fairways to hit. Throughout the course there is an abundance of purple heather and golden gorse, and although it may be stunning to look at, can create problems for even the most talented golfers. The ninth hole is probably one of the most famous in golf – at 486 yards; this long par 4 is played from one side of a huge mound to the other, with the approach shot proving to be particularly difficult. This really is one of worlds most privileged golf location - a must play links course.
