James Braid designed the championship layout here at Musselburgh Golf Club in 1938 and the course was opened with an exhibition match between James Braid himself, Henry Cotton, Percy Alliss and Alf Padgham. A number of professional and amateur tournament have been hosted on Musselburgh Golf Course over the years, including Final Qualifying course for The Open in 2013.
Musselburgh Golf Course is a fantastic parkland challenge that uses the natural landscape to superb effect and set around the River Esk and Craigie burn, which creates a number of interesting and tough approach shots. The golf course is relatively flat and features large tree-lined fairways, although at 6,725 yards it is a rather lengthy ordeal. The signature hole at Musselburgh Golf Course is the par 4 17th which requires a tight drive between trees on either side of the tee box to a welcoming fairway followed by a difficult approach shot to a green well guarded by bunkers. The course at Musselburgh isn’t as well known as the traditional links golf courses in the area but has certainly proven to be an admired alternative.
