  • 18 holes, par 70, 6449 yards. Links.

Located in Cardiff, just down the road from Celtic Manor, this is an absolute hidden gem of a golf course. Southerndown was originally laid out by Willie Fernie in 1905 and has since had a number of hands on golf architects add to innate characteristics. The entire club is situated on elevated land above the Ogmore River Valley which provides visitors with impressive views across the Bristol Channel.

The golf course itself if a very unique limestone-heathland-links which encapsulates all of the natural gorse and bracken, which Fernie worked so very hard to remain untouched. At just over 6,400 yards Southerndown is not the longest course, but the ever present westerly winds and sand traps do more than enough to make up for this. The 1st hole is probably the most memorable – an uphill short par 4 that is known for being one of the most difficult opening holes in golf. Southerndown Golf Course is truly remarkable and must play for anyone travelling to Wales for a golf vacation.
